5 Simple Ways to Stay Safe this Summer
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it's also important to stay safe. Here are some simple tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable summer:
1. Stay hydrated. It's important to stay hydrated, especially when it's hot outside. Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks.
2. Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every two hours, or more often if you're sweating or swimming.
3. Be careful around water. Whether you're swimming, boating, or fishing, it's important to be careful around water. Always swim with a buddy, and never drink alcohol before or while you're swimming.
4. Be aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a serious condition that can be fatal. Both can be characterized by dizziness, weakness, headaches, and a rise in body temperature. One main difference is that during Heat Exhaustion, your body will sweat profusely; during heat stroke, you may not be able to sweat. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and call 911 immediately.
5. Take precautions against insect bites. Insects like mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases, so it's important to take precautions against insect bites. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and use insect repellent.
During day of extreme heat, when an advisory has been released, the Seton Center will operate as a Cooling Station during opening hours (10am-4pm, Monday-Saturday). Bring a water bottle - filling stations are available!
