ALICE: Why affordable housing is an oxymoron

Housing Challenges for ALICE

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) is a term used to describe individuals and families who are working but struggling to make ends meet due to their income level and limited access to assets. ALICE households often have to make tough choices when it comes to essential expenses, including housing.

Housing is one of the most significant expenses for any household. For ALICE households, it can be particularly challenging to find safe and affordable housing. In many areas, the cost of housing has increased faster than wages, making it difficult for ALICE families to keep up. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, there is no state in the United States where a minimum-wage worker can afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent.

In addition to the high cost of housing, ALICE households may face other obstacles in securing a place to live. For example, they may not have a credit history or a substantial savings account, which can make it challenging to pass the background checks and application processes required by many landlords. Additionally, they may not have a co-signer or references to vouch for them, which can further complicate the housing search.

Even if an ALICE family is able to find a place to live, the high cost of rent can make it difficult to afford other essential expenses, such as food, transportation, and healthcare. In some cases, families may have to choose between paying for housing or paying for other essential needs, which can lead to difficult decisions and sacrifices.

The lack of affordable housing can also have long-term consequences for ALICE households. For example, it can lead to unstable housing situations, such as frequent moves or living in overcrowded conditions, which can affect children's education and well-being. It can also make it difficult for families to save money or build assets, which can limit their ability to improve their financial situation in the future.

To address the housing difficulties faced by ALICE households, there are a few potential solutions. One approach is to increase the supply of affordable housing, either through government programs or private investment. This could involve building new affordable housing units, or renovating existing buildings to make them more affordable. Another approach is to increase access to housing assistance programs, such as housing vouchers or rental subsidies, which can help families afford safe and stable housing.

The challenges faced by ALICE households when it comes to housing are significant and have far-reaching consequences. While there is no easy solution to this complex issue, it is crucial that we continue to raise awareness about the struggles faced by these families and work towards finding sustainable and equitable solutions to provide them with safe and affordable housing.
